Dermatology - Disappearing/Reappering Scars?

About 13 years ago (in high school), I was in the gym goofing around on a carpet covered platform and fell in a way the caused my face to scrape the carpet. This left me with a "rug burn" on the portion of my skin just above the bridge of my nose, between my eyes and below my brow line. Anyway, it left a small red patch of skin that I assumed was a kind of scar (because of course I picked at it while it healed) that eventually went away. Every once in awhile, however, that small red patch will reappear over the course of a few days, but just as suddenly, disappear again a few days later. Is this a true scar or something else?
