Knee Injury: Lower leg bruising continues to spread?

Over a week ago my son had a bad knee injury during Rugby. He went for an MRI scan last night -but the bruising around the knee has spread to the calf muscle and this morning has spread to the other side of the leg. I'm worried about this - could it be haemorrhaging? Anyone else experienced this?
